The record
France has competed at Miss Universe since its earliest editions. It has won twice, and the second win took sixty-three years to arrive.
1953
Christiane Martel
The second Miss Universe in the competition’s history, crowned in Long Beach, California.
2016
Iris Mittenaere
Crowned in Manila. France’s first win since Martel, and the most widely followed French titleholder the competition has had.
2026
Still unwritten
The 75th edition, in Puerto Rico. For the first time, France’s delegate will be chosen through an open selection.
The competition
Miss Universe is the oldest and most watched of the international competitions. Every country sends one representative, chosen by whichever national organisation holds the franchise.
In France, that representative was for decades Miss France. That organisation announced it would not send a candidate in 2026. Miss Universe has since begun putting a new French selection in place, run by a committee established for the purpose. The exact terms will be set out by the international organisation.
The consequence is simple, and it is without precedent in France: there is no longer a regional circuit to climb. The selection is open to women from every French region and territory, mainland and overseas alike.
Miss Universe France is not Miss France. It is a separate competition, a separate organisation, and a separate route to the international stage.
